Wine of the Week:14 year old Chianti

Last updated 2 years ago

I love well-aged red wines. In today's world of wanting everything this second, where most wine gets opened within 1-2 days of purchase, wine that will improve with age represents a tiny portion of what you see on the shelves of a store. At least some of those precious bottles do end up in the hands of collectors who will leave them alone for years or decades, but that doesn't help the rest of you who don't cellar wine.

(A side note is that most basements in New England are great for wine storage, so many of you could be aging your own, but that's not what this email is about.) We sometimes have access to aged high end wines, and some of you have bought those potentially very impressive bottles from us, but I'm always on the lookout for a wine that has some age on it, has developed well, and is reasonably priced. That's a tough combination to find, and it's exactly what I have to offer you today.

Chianti is one of the great and few remaining values in the world of highly ageworthy red wine. When I tasted this one, I was very, very happy to be able to offer it to our customers, especially for under $30.

Age has accentuated the notes of autumn leaves and forest floor in this wine, adding a smoky, savory element and transforming some of the still-evident core of fresh cherry and floral notes into those of dried cherries and flowers. There is a great combination of these mature aromas and remnants of the lively freshness that would have defined this wine in its youth. For me, this is at peak now, but it will surely hold for at least 5 more years (stored well), and for those who like fully mature Chianti, it will see further improvement over that time. This is a steal at this price, and I'll be happy to have a few in my own basement.

Here's the wine.
